SEVERINSEN-AKRIGHT BEL CANTO MODEL 54 Bb TRUMPET superb copy of Doc's 1930's NY Bach Strad. Very rare horn in excellent condition for a 30 year old horn. Up for sale is my wonderful Bel Canto trumpet. Hand made by Dick Akright of Oakland, California in collaboration with trumpet legend Doc Severinsen. Together the two men designed a trumpet that is considered one of the finest instruments in the world. Doc wanted a horn that looked and played just like an old 1930 New York Bach that he had. The Bel Canto I am told was the closest copy of the original NY Bach ever manufactured. Only about 1000 of these fine horns were made. Due to the high manufacturing cost it became too expensive for Doc and Dick Akright to keep making them and so production stopped in around 1995. They were designed by Doc Severinsen and handcrafted by Dick Akright. The Model 54 is the ML version. The particular trumpet is well used but in great playing condition. Easy. Efficient blow. Quick response. Even intonation. Very flexible tone color, that is, responds well to various mouthpiece choices. I played this trumpet in the pits on Broadway in NYC as well as various big bands.
