We meet at Union Music Performance Space at 7:00 PM with our fearless leader Rich “Amazing Dick” Leufstedt at the helm. What we do monthly is have a brief ukulele lesson, learn some chords and positions for them, work on our “strum”, and then play some 3 chord (easy) songs together. After that we have a chance for individuals to perform a song for the group, and then to socialize and talk about ukuleles.

As an independent music retail store in the Worcester MA community, it is crucial to our longstanding success to recognize and develop the connections we have with people within our city, and beyond. Our owner, Carl Kamp, and the entire staff are native to this area, and have worked as musicians for decades in and around Worcester County. We know how tightly knit this area can be, and know that when one is hurt or lost, we all feel the loss. It’s a family thing, and Worcester people care deeply about such things.
Recently, Kurlan Music, for many years the only other independent music store in Worcester, closed its doors about 18 months after the sudden passing of its owner Paul Gervais. Generations of musicians have lost a valued location where, much like at Union Music, talents had been nourished and connections had been forged. There was a close relationship between our two stores; many times calls were exchanged to find sheet music or an instrument the other might have, all in service of our customers. Both stores operated with long time employees, dedicated followers, and a commitment to service and connecting just not found at big box stores. Both stores were led/owned by life-long musicians, generous to customers, students, employees, and community causes. There is a hole in the fabric of the music community today with Kurlan’s closing, that will not be easily healed.
Union Music has employed Bob Sarkala, long time Kurlan manager, and taken on a number of former Kurlan teachers in an effort to continue that healing and offer a place for Kurlan customers and students to call home. We welcome all former Kurlan Music customers to come by and say hello, check us out, and consider Union Music home for their music needs. Business is certainly a bottom line endeavor, and we are most grateful for the continued financial support of the Worcester music community, but it is also a heart & soul endeavor, and we are grateful too for the opportunity to be there for everyone. Welcome home!
